With this square-format artwork, Medsan seals Sonic the Hedgehog, SEGA’s blue mascot born in 1991, inside a gothic stained-glass rose window. The supersonic hedgehog occupies the space medieval glassmakers reserved for saints and archangels, at the center of a radiant stained glass. The mashup rests on a single idea, and it is blunt: the video game icon elevated to the rank of sacred figure.

The image shows Sonic sprinting at full speed, body angled forward, white-gloved fists clenched, his red sneakers with a white buckle caught in mid-stride. A green glass ring surrounds him like the halo of a sanctuary figure, while the black lead lines radiate outward from the center, tirelessly drawing the gaze back to his sly smile. The palette borrows from the stained-glass color schemes — cobalt blue, emerald green, ruby red, and amber yellows that mimic the glow of gilded glass — punctuated by orange sparkles streaking like speed trails. In the lower-right corner, the cartouche メドサン signs the composition as a master glassmaker’s mark.

The stained glass is an art that tells, teaches, and invites reverence. By placing a console character within it, Medsan tensions two opposing temporalities: the contemplative slowness of the cathedral and the pure speed, Sonic’s sole virtue. The work then poses a question without answering it — what figures does our era really spotlight, and before which an entire generation has grown up?
