With this vertical-format work, Medsan superimposes two Japanese figures into a single silhouette: from behind, a samurai in armor, helmet kabuto topped with its crescent maedate, spear raised to his left. In the opening of his cloak appears a vermilion-lacquered bridge under the snow, cousin of Nikkō’s Shinkyō and Hiroshige’s winter landscapes. The graphic language is sumi-e—the monochrome ink of learned painters—intersected with a wholly modern method: double exposure.

The figure occupies the full height and turns its back to the viewer, still, shoulders heavy with snow. Its cloak is not fabric but a window: the bridge unfolds in an arc there, its red guard rails aligned above an iced river, while white flakes cross the entire field. The palette is restrained to three voices—the ink-black of the silhouette, the cold grays, and the reserved white of the landscape, with a single red that exists only for the bridge. Dark splashes surround, dispersing the space, and a red hanko-style stamp marks the lower right corner. The light background mimics the grain of Japanese paper and leaves the composition entirely to the warrior’s shadow.

The mashup speaks a simple, grave truth: the man of war carries the country he defends within him. The bridge, a motif of passage and return, is inscribed exactly where his heart should beat, and the snow that falls inside also falls outside. His face is never seen—only his memory is shown to us.

A contemplative and graphic piece, ideal for adding a touch of Japaneseness and quiet to a minimalist interior, for a collector attached to prints as well as to Japanese culture. You receive a unique, silk-screen print on canvas, produced by pigment printing, numbered 1/1 and hand-signed.

About the Workshop:
