With this square-format work, Medsan brings Pikachu, the electric mascot of the Pokémon franchise born at Game Freak and Nintendo in 1996, into the visual language of sumi-e, the Japanese ink painting with its landscape washes. The creature bursts from a cracked Poké Ball in the heart of the tall grasses, like a spirit escaped from an ancient scroll. The red cartouche メドサン, placed at the bottom right like an artist’s seal, signs the piece and ties it to this tradition.

In the foreground, the red and white Poké Ball lies on its side in the grass, its shell cracked, hinge opened, releasing a spray of blue and yellow sparks. Pikachu rises just above, legs apart, red cheeks, mouth open in a joyful cry, its tail extended like a lightning bolt with electric arcs racing toward the right edge. Around them, the image shows the tall grasses, umbels and small flowers in bold black lines and washes of greens, ochers and grays that the print imitates with the fluidity of watercolor. The cream background remains almost empty at the edges: this emptiness, the ma of the Japanese painters, guides the eye along the diagonal that climbs from the shattered sphere to the flying animal.

All the mashup hinges on this tension: the most recognizable icon of contemporary Japanese pop culture, viewed through the codes of Edo ink painting and its vermilion seal. The Poké Ball, the ultimate capture device, is here cracked and defeated; the hero does not enter it, he emerges from it. Two Japans meet, that of scrolls and that of consoles, and the latter allows itself to be contemplated just like the former, without irony.

A vivid and immediately legible piece, ideal for adding a touch of Japanese pop culture to a contemporary interior, to a passionate person’s office, or to a collector’s wall. What you receive is a single giclée on canvas, a pigment print numbered 1/1 and hand-signed: only one copy exists in the world.
