With this square-format artwork, Medsan pits the most recognizable mecha icon of Japanese animation — Evangelion Unit-01 from Neon Genesis Evangelion, created by Hideaki Anno for the studio Gainax — against two Japanese artisanal traditions: kintsugi, the art of repairing broken ceramics by highlighting the fracture, and the blue-and-white porcelain of the Arita and Jingdezhen kilns. The violet helmet, horned mask and jagged jaw are intact in their silhouette, but their surface has been fractured and then reassembled. The cartouche メドサン signs the work at the bottom right, in the manner of a workshop seal.

The Eva occupies the square facing forward, frontal and centered, in almost total darkness that reveals nothing of its surroundings: neither city, nor Angel, nor Nerv. Its white eyes, reduced to two sharp slits, gaze the viewer directly in the eye, while the jaw reveals a row of tightly clenched teeth — the creature’s posture subdued rather than that of the robot at rest. The armor plates are overwhelmed with cobalt-blue floral motifs, peonies, arabesques and chrysanthemums, with deep reds on the shoulder pads and the breastplate, and the veins mimicking gold leaf run from one fragment to another, tracing a network that climbs from the torso to the crest of the helmet. The pale green inserts on the cheeks and sternum and the dominant purple remain faithful to Unit-01’s original livery, making the material substitution all the more unsettling.

This mashup says a simple and hard thing: the war machine is pottery. Unit-01 is, in the series, a wounded, constrained body, inhabited by a soul; kintsugi gives it the only armor that truly fits, one that does not erase the cracks but honors them as golden scars. Where the anime shows a titan in frenzy, Medsan presents the fragile object it has always been, repaired with care and displayed as a collector’s treasure.
