With this square-format work, Medsan brings R2-D2, the astromech droid from George Lucas's Star Wars saga, into the visual vocabulary of Gothic stained glass. The most endearing droid of science-fiction cinema takes the place reserved for saints in church windows, surrounded by lead cames and lifted by a radiant glory. The cartouche メドサン signs the composition in the lower-right corner, like an workshop mark.

The droid stands upright, slightly off-center, its three feet on a floor of blue tiles that recedes in perspective toward the bottom of the frame. Its dome is treated in broad milky and violet bands where the camera eye acts as a stained glass window within the stained glass window, while the cylindrical body breaks down into a checkerboard of turquoise, mint, and pearl gray panels — every button, every ventilation grille becomes a piece of glass in its own right. Behind it, a beam of rays alternates between deep ultramarine and bright cyan, a motif of divine glory borrowed from medieval rose windows that pop art has adopted for its icons. The palette, all in shades of blues and greenish water tones, conveys the freshness of glass lit by morning light, and the convergence of rays consistently draws the viewer's gaze back to the dome, the spiritual summit of the composition.

The gesture is that of joyful canonization: by giving a fictional machine the treatment that the Middle Ages reserved for the sacred, Medsan questions what our contemporary mythologies have claimed as their place. R2-D2, a faceless and speechless character, becomes a figure of modern devotion, and the stained glass — the pedagogical medium par excellence, the one that told stories to the faithful — regains exactly its original function applied to the saga that shaped several generations. The irony is gentle, never mocking.
