With this square-format piece, Medsan brings Charizard—the fire dragon iconic to the Pokémon franchise—into the vocabulary of grand Byzantine mosaics, the apses of Ravenna, and the haloed figures of San Vitale. The trainer becomes a nimbated child, profiled like a sacred figure. The swirls saturating the background also evoke the Viennese Secession spirals and Klimt’s golden period, grafted onto a Japanese video game icon. The cartouche メドサン, discreet at the bottom right, signs the scene like an atelier seal.

The child, barefoot with a flaming cape billowing behind him, reaches a hand toward the dragon’s snout, which bows to meet him. The entire surface is built in simulated tesserae: the reptile’s scales, concentric red and cream arcs, spirals revolving around the two heads like a whirlwind of fire. The palette, kept to ochre, orange, deep red, and bright yellows, imitates the glow of ancient gold backgrounds without ever yielding to another color. The composition brings the gaze back to the exact center of the image: the open palm pressed against the nostrils, a moment of calm at the heart of the blaze.

The mashup says one simple, strong thing: the pocket monster, creature of cards and screens, here is treated as a tutelary deity, and the child as the saint who tames it. The halo shifts devotion from religious icons toward the mythologies of contemporary childhood. What Byzantine mosaics reserved for emperors, Medsan grants to a bond of trust between a kid and his dragon.
