With this square-format artwork, Medsan brings Tortank — Blastoise, the final evolution of Squirtle, into the Pokémon Game Freak bestiary, into the vocabulary of Byzantine mosaic and Gustav Klimt's golden era. Behind the creature, the swelling wave from Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa uncoils its foam-claws over a field that imitates gold leaf. The cartouche メドサン at the bottom of the composition signs the image like a Japanese workshop seal.

The scene rests on a single gesture: a child in a spiral kimono, feet bare and eyes closed, places the palm on the solar disc that adorns the shell. Tortank has lowered its head, its two cannons pointed toward the sky rather than an opponent, the jaw at rest. Around them, everything is fragmented into simulated tesserae — lapis blue, ivory, deep green — and the imitation gold occupies the background like in a Ravenna apse. The sweeping curves of the waves and the drape of the kimono form one spiral that draws the gaze back to this hand laid down, the exact emotional center of the image.

The mashup says one simple, rare thing: the combat icon becomes a sacred animal, and the training scene becomes a scene of contemplation. In treating a first-generation Pokémon as Klimt treated his figures — wrapped in ornament, isolated on a field of simulated gold, without realistic scenery — Medsan turns videogame nostalgia into an object of devotion. The wave in Hokusai reminds us that the creature is a force of water: here it is pacified by a child.
