With this square-format artwork, Medsan brings San, Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, into the language of Japanese blue-and-white porcelain repaired with kintsugi. The Ghibli film released in 1997 intersects here with the tradition of Arita-yaki, its deep cobalt on an ivory background and its network of cracks. In the bottom left, the red cartouche メドサン signs the composition in the manner of an atelier seal.

Moro, the she-wolf goddess, occupies two-thirds of the image: mouth open with fangs bared, eye stretched toward a danger outside the frame, spine bristling with thousands of parallel lines. Against her flank, San lowers her eyelids, headband tight on the forehead, the red marks on her face and an open shoulder wound — with the seal, the only touches of red in the entire composition. In the upper right, three kodama emerge from a bouquet of ferns, round heads and open mouths, silent witnesses to the scene. A network of pale veins that imitates the gold leaf of the kintsugi runs across the whole piece and guides the gaze from the wolf’s snout to the child’s face.

The breakage is here the very subject. Kintsugi does not hide the crack; it emphasizes it and makes it the most precious part of the object. The image applies this principle to a heroine raised by wolves, wounded, caught between two worlds she cannot reconcile — the forest and humans. The golden lines run over Moro’s fur as well as San’s silhouette: the goddess and the child bear the same fracture, and the mashup says exactly that, what has been repaired is not healed, and that this is visible.
