MEDSAN - Kintsugi Godzilla (金継ぎのゴジラ) - UNIQUE WORK

With this vertical-format work, Medsan confronts Godzilla, the kaijū born in 1954 under Ishirō Honda's camera for Toho, with the Japanese tradition of blue-and-white porcelain — Arita sometsuke, cousin of Delft blue and the great Ming depictions. The atomic monster appears treated as a dragon of antique tableware, and the entire surface mimics a crackled enamel, broken and repaired according to the principle of kintsugi. The mashup is contained in a single image: the icon of destruction becomes the fragile object itself.

Godzilla erupts from three-quarters, mouth open on a double row of teeth drawn with fine lines, the eye reduced to a dark dot encircled in red. Its spiny back plates occupy the rising diagonal, while its claws close on a miniature skyline with some windows lighting up in bright red. A scarlet flow descends along the throat, the only other warm accent in the composition: the atomic breath starting to rise. The rest is held in a wash of blue hatchings on an ivory background, and the network of cracks, outlined by veins that imitate kintsugi gilding, guides the eye from top left to the city below.

Kintsugi does not hide the crack; it highlights it: the fracture becomes the most precious ornament of the object. By applying this principle to Godzilla, Medsan inverts the roles — the being that breaks cities is here the broken piece, re glued, sublimated. The reading is compelling for a monster that Japan made to be a metaphor for its own nuclear wound, in a country that repairs its porcelain rather than discarding it.
