With this vertically oriented work, Medsan brings Goldorak — the UFO Robo Grendizer imagined by Go Nagai — into the vocabulary of Japanese ukiyo-e prints. The composition cites the famous waterfall landscapes of Hokusai and Hiroshige, down to the ornamental frame and the vertical cartouche メドサン, the artist’s signature in katakana, inscribed in the upper right.

The giant is seated in the middle of the riverbed, legs stretched in the current, leaning against the waterfall that cascades down the rocky wall. On the left bank, a group of villagers in kimono and yukata raise their arms and wave fans, as one salutes a wrestler or a passing god. The sun with rectilinear rays, the tiered pines, the bluish mountains and the white foam all belong to the print repertoire, while the black, red and bright yellow of the armor burst in like an alien color. The diagonal of the cascade guides the eye down to the crescent-shaped helmet, then the river returns it to the minuscule crowd on the shore.

All meaning lies in this mismatch: the hero one has never seen except in flight or in battle is here stopped, sitting in the cold water, doing nothing. Medsan treats him as a landscape figure — one more rock, a descended deity bathing — and the ancient print effortlessly absorbs the 1975 machine. The mecha becomes a traditional motif, the landscape becomes a scene from an animated series, and each legitimizes the other.
