With this square-format work, Medsan brings the Thousand Sunny, the pirate ship of the Straw Hat Crew from Eiichiro Oda's One Piece, into the heart of a polar fjord pierced by the aurora borealis. The most-read manga franchise meets here the great tradition of Nordic romantic landscape, that of Caspar David Friedrich’s seascapes where a tiny craft faces an immense nature. The entire mashup rests in this gap: a Japanese pop culture icon placed in a sublime 19th-century setting.

The Sunny advances alone at the center of the channel, red hull and warm wood, the sun-headed lion with orange mane at the prow, crossed bones at the stern, the black pennant raised at the top of the mast and the Jolly Roger on the Straw Hat’s hat on the mainsail. On either side, two dark cliffs etched with frozen waterfalls close the composition into a vertical corridor that guides the gaze to the background, where a crescent moon floats under the green, turquoise and violet curtains of the aurora. The palette sharply opposes the icy blues, almost monochrome, to the reds and ochres of the ship, the sole warm hub of the entire image. The water reflects the aurora and the hull in fractured reflections, and a fine snowfall dots the surface with white specks.

The meaning of the scene is that of a cap held against the immensity. The ship is small, the night is vast, but the sail remains billowed and the road open: it is exactly the promise this boat has carried for twenty years to its readers. Medsan relocates a symbol of tropical adventure to the great cold, and the initial idea gains gravity.

A luminous and narrative piece, ideal to bring a touch of contemporary adventure to the interior of a collector devoted to great manga icons.
