Description from the seller
Edward Hopper: “Summer Evening, 1947”.
This offset lithograph is in very good condition.
Format: 44 x 31 cm.
In Hopper's paintings couples are usually used as a means to express hope or loneliness.
Here however, the man and woman on the veranda, both young and dressed in the late forties style, form a deviation from the artist's melancholic relationship paintings.
Nevertheless the scene is imbued with inner tension. The two figures, lit as actors on a stage, stand almost stripped of all defense mechanisms in the bright spotlight, yet seem to feel safe.
Their meeting place is a defined area, and the last area to be conquered is the woman's body. The colors and concentrated composition make this an almost symbolic painting.
It escapes a single interpretation, but like other works by Hopper on similar themes, it offers empirical commentary on the patterns of existence, giving the viewer the impression that they are witnessing the opening scene of the story of a relationship.
Never framed and kept in a dark archival storage between protective acid-free paper.
The shown photos are part of the description.
