Description from the seller
Edward Hopper: “Summertime, 1943”.
Signed on the plate.
This offset lithograph is in very good condition.
Size: 44 x 31 cm.
The body of the young woman on the steps of a townhouse is more revealed than concealed by her light dress. In an almost provocative pose she faces the sun. Curtains fluttering in the wind through an open window give dynamism to the bright architectural geometry of the painting and reveal – just like the entrance to the house – a black space inside.
As Hopper’s preparatory studies show, the curtains with their sexual connotation only appear in the final painting. The inner dynamics of the painting, fed by the interaction between the interior space and the phallic pillars, transform the composition into a phantasmagoric construct. In it, desire and promise, challenge and surrender are directly translated into spatial images.
Where Hopper’s other paintings depict the boundaries between nature and civilization, this work focuses on the constraints imposed on the body in the process of civilization.
Never framed and kept in a dark archive storage between protective acid-free paper. The displayed photos are part of the description.
