Description from the seller

I propose without reserve price:

Splendid painting on panel from 1951, by Luigi Polverini (Rome 1903-1960). It is a classic post-Macciaiola genre scene, a thread in which the artist excelled at depicting traditional trades and glimpses of daily life.
The painting depicts a sharpener sharpening a blade on a large pedal-powered circular grinding wheel. The man wears simple work clothes and a typical hat with a decorative feather, set in a handsome gilded frame with glass.
In the background rises a castle with a crenellated tower, a recurring element in the artist’s views of Lazio and Tuscany.
The color application is strongly tactile, with swift brushstrokes and bursts of light that define the volumes without getting lost in minute details, typical of his production. The signature is in cursive in the lower left corner and on the back.
Size: 12.5 x 17 cm, with frame 15 x 19.5 cm.
The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
