Karl Lagasse, a renowned artist, gained notoriety in 2009 with his One Dollar sculptures, ranking among the ten best sculptors under 30 according to Artprice in that year. In 2012, the New York publication Farameh named him as one of the fifty best contemporary artists, inspired by traditional American icons, in its volume FOR WHICH IT STANDS: Americana in Contemporary Art. More recently, in 2016, during the Art Paris Art Fair, the President of the French Republic warmly praised Karl for his impressive 2-meter bronze sculpture One Dollar, exhibited at the Grand Palais.
Karl's artistic journey began at age 7 with collages, spurred by his meeting with sculptor César Baldaccini. He later approached tagging and graffiti in the Paris metro, while remaining passionate about collage. The artist Yvaral Vasarely encouraged him to blend his tags with collages. In 2003 Karl prepared his first show in Paris, which led to a solo show in 2006 at the Isy Brachot gallery in Brussels. In 2008 he returned to Paris with an exhibition combining paintings, sculptures and video elements inside the Espace Pierre Cardin.
Karl particularly enjoys displaying his works during international exhibitions. In 2011 he was represented by Bel Air Fine Art at the Art Monaco fair with his Cryptogram One. The following year he presented his One Dollar works on the theme “In God We Trust” at the Artco France gallery. His 2016 solo show at Atrium Gallery in Marbella, Spain, was opened by the mayor, who praised his work before the international press.
In 2010 he was chosen to represent Deauville at the Horsemania world equestrian championship in Lexington, where he created a horse sculpture dedicated to the event. In 2012 he donated Cryptogram One, a symbolic bronze of peace and love, to Deauville, at the city’s entrance. In the same year, in collaboration with Corbis, he created a monumental sculpture for the Cannes Festival, using photographs from 1945 to 2011 signed by personalities such as Alexandra Lamy and Matthew McConaughey.
The artist gained notoriety in 2009 with his “One Dollar” sculptures, which ranked him among the top ten global sculptors under 30 by Artprice.
In 2017 he was selected to design the trophies for the 43rd American Film Festival. Drawing inspiration from “Cryptogramme One,” he created a melted aluminum trophy with a mirrored finish, bearing messages such as "Hope", "7e Art" and "Deauville" on its four faces. For the 46th edition of the Festival in 2020, Karl Lagasse received a commission to create a new trophy, inspired by a symbolic Deauville emblem: the drawing of the barriers that separate the deck chairs on the Planches.
In 2016, France Culture mentioned Karl in an article about his monumental installation, A Piece of Heaven on Earth, which combines a Maserati wrapped in white plastic and a statue of Jesus surrounded by dollar-shaped sculptures, symbolizing human debt. This work was unveiled during Art Paris Art Fair 2015 in collaboration with Maserati. In 2017 he created the Trophy for the American Film Festival in Deauville, taking inspiration from his Cryptogramme One and adding messages such as "Hope" and "7e Art" to the trophies.
