About the work:
On a promontory suspended between two worlds, a regal creature — half human, half bird, golden crown and scarlet ermine mantle — points to the horizon with an accusing finger, eyes bulging, mouth slightly open in a silent cry. Under its clawed paws, a dark, mossy wooden cliff plunges toward still water where, inverted, an entire kingdom of turrets and spires is reflected — as if the upper world and the lower world were answering each other in a murky mirror.
The work openly situates itself in the lineage of Hieronymus Bosch, whose spirit haunts every corner of the composition: hybrid human-animal forms, fantastical architecture with twisted towers and improbable arches, the juxtaposition of a bustling microcosm (the village) and a threatening macrocosm (the regal figure), and above all the painter’s characteristic tension between wonder and grotesque, childishness and the disturbing. As in The Garden of Earthly Delights or The Ship of Fools, power is embodied by a deformed, grimacing figure, both pathetic and terrifying — a timeless allegory of authority that strays, of a sovereign blinded by his own reflection.

A historian of art by training, Emmanuelle Pellet studied at the École du Louvre and then at the Sorbonne, before being admitted to the aggregation of visual arts (3rd place). After several years of teaching, she joined the Louvre Museum as head of educational outreach.
Her career today nourishes a personal body of work where painting mastery dialogues with a deep culture of imagery and the history of art. Her creations have been exhibited in galleries in Paris, London, Singapore and Mauritius, and have been the subject of numerous publications. They are today included in private collections in Europe, North America, Asia and the Indian Ocean.
