Albert Marquet (1875-1947) was a French painter associated with the Fauvist movement, though he developed a more restrained style than his contemporaries.
A close friend of Henri Matisse, he studied with him at the School of Fine Arts and participated in the 1905 Salon d'Automne.
Marquet is best known for his urban and maritime landscapes, often painted from windows or from a height, capturing light and atmosphere with great sensitivity.
His use of color is more restrained than that of the other Fauves, favoring nuanced tones and a structured composition.
He traveled across Europe and North Africa, where he produced numerous views of ports, rivers and coastlines.
His work, between tempered Fauvism and poetic realism, is distinguished by a masterful handling of light and reflections, particularly on the water.
