In August 1959, the Netherlands was the backdrop for a remarkable week of cycling. The road World Championships were held at the Zandvoort circuit, while the track World Championships took place at the Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam.
The professional road race was a true classic: André Darrigade became world champion after a little over 292 kilometres. Behind him, Michele Gismondi and Noël Foré finished.
