Description from the seller
Original vintage poster – Road World Championships 1959, Netherlands
Beautiful original vintage poster created for the 1959 World Road Championships in the Netherlands.
In August 1959, the Netherlands was the backdrop for a remarkable week of cycling. The road World Championships were held at the Zandvoort circuit, while the track World Championships took place at the Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam.
The professional road race was a true classic: André Darrigade became world champion after a little over 292 kilometres. Behind him, Michele Gismondi and Noël Foré finished. The participants included big names from the era, such as Jacques Anquetil, Tom Simpson, Rik van Steenbergen, Rik van Looy, Ercole Baldini, Jo de Roo and Ab Geldermans.
Dutch cycling history is also strongly represented: Ab Geldermans finished sixth and Coen Niesten eighth.
A special setting from the golden era of postwar cycling and thus a fine addition for enthusiasts of vintage cycling, Dutch sports history, graphic design and original sports posters.
Year: 1959
Event: World Road Championships
Netherlands: Zandvoort / Amsterdam
A special piece of cycling history from a time when names like Anquetil, Van Steenbergen, Van Looy and Darrigade dictated the course.
