Description from the seller
Mid-Century Hand-Carved Rosewood Crocodile Desk Sculpture / Paperweight, Circa 1950–1970
An impressive and highly decorative mid-century hand-carved wooden crocodile, believed to date from approximately 1950 to 1970.
This unusual desk accessory is beautifully crafted from what has been identified by an antique dealer as rosewood (palissandre). The deep, richly coloured wood displays an attractive natural grain, giving the sculpture a particularly elegant and refined appearance.
The crocodile features an expressive and stylised design, with finely carved scales along its back and tail, detailed legs, an articulated opening mouth and distinctive metal eyes. The strong sculptural lines and decorative design are characteristic of the Mid-Century period, making this piece both a functional desk accessory and an eye-catching decorative sculpture.
The crocodile is mounted on its original rectangular wooden base, incorporating a reflective mirrored panel. This combination of richly grained rosewood and reflective material creates a sophisticated contrast and enhances the presence of the sculpture.
With its substantial weight and solid construction, this unusual piece can be displayed as a desk paperweight, decorative desk sculpture or conversation piece. It would make a wonderful addition to a study, library, office or collection of unusual vintage decorative objects.
