Description from the seller
Italian devotional triptych – polychrome wood and bas-relief decoration (printed image)
Magnificent devotional triptych with an architectural format, of notable decorative presence, made of wood and richly ornamented with three-dimensional relief decorations, polychromy and finishes with a gilded appearance.
The piece adopts the traditional shape of a small portable altar or altarello, composed of a central body and two side leaves that hinge open. When closed, the leaves protect the inner scene; when opened, the ensemble takes on the appearance of a small domestic altarpiece, conceived for private contemplation and devotion.
The overall composition reveals a clear inspiration from Italian sacred art of Renaissance tradition, reinterpreted through a historicist language characteristic of the 20th century. The architectural structure, the pointed (gothic) finials and the abundant ornamental decoration combine neorenaissance and neogothic references, giving the whole a particularly rich and stage-like appearance.
Central panel
The central panel houses the principal religious scene.
In it appears the Virgin Mary, represented in a serene and majestic pose, seated and accompanied by two naked infant figures, iconographically interpretable as the Child Jesus and the little Saint John the Baptist.
The composition clearly derives from the Italian painting tradition of the 15th and 16th centuries, in which it was customary to represent the Virgin together with the Child Jesus and Saint John in intimate and devotional scenes.
The Virgin is dressed in a combination of dark green and red tones, while the bodies of the children are depicted in warm hues, creating a strong chromatic contrast with the background.
Left panel
The left side panel presents a standing angelic figure, depicted in a serene and devotional attitude. The figure appears within an architectural niche with a pointed profile, delineated by moldings and rich relief ornamentation.
The angel is shown with wings extended to the sides, partially visible behind the body, and wears a long tunic in green tones, accompanied by reddish and golden details. Its stance is frontal, though slightly turned, and it holds a devotional element between its hands.
The figure is surrounded by elaborate foliage scrolls, leaves and vegetal volutes in relief, executed with notable volume and subsequently polychromed. The ensemble creates the effect of a small sculptural niche integrated into the door of the triptych.
Right panel
The right side panel presents a second winged angel figure, conceived symmetrically to the left panel.
The angel is likewise standing inside a pointed architectural niche, with wings clearly visible behind the shoulders and the body. It wears a long tunic of green and reddish colors, enriched with decorative details that harmonize with the polychromy of the rest of the triptych.
The figure adopts a calm and contemplative stance, with hands placed in front of the body, reinforcing its role as an assisting or adorant angel of the Marian central composition.
The niche is richly framed by vegetal relief ornamentation, formed by stylized leaves, stems, volutes and curved elements. The decoration presents different tones and a pronounced patina, which enhances the antique and historicist character of the piece.
