This is a decorative box/jar with a lid (known as a bonbonnière or a box for rice powder/jewels) made of fine porcelain with elaborate ornamentation.

Item Identification

Origin: Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary), Bohemia region (currently Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic). The engraved mark on the bottom with the inscription "Karlsbad" confirms the provenance of this prestigious porcelain production area of Austro-Hungarian/Bohemian origin.

Year/Period: Late 19th century to early 20th century (approximately 1890–1910), the Historicism / Fin de Siècle era.

Material: Porcelain with a magenta/wine-toned background (claret/cranberry), hand-painted, interior gilded coating (vermeil / gold immersion/painted gold) and raised enamel details with gold leaf.

Detailed Description

Lid iconography: Features a miniaturized central painting with the inscription "Mühlbrunnen" (Mühlbrunnkolonnade / Colonnade of the Mill Fountain), one of the most famous and emblematic spa pavilions in the spa town of Karlsbad.

Finish: Edge decorated with gold garlands and pearlized relief trim (beaded trim) in enamel. The interior of the box and lid displays an entirely gold and mirror-like finish of very refined quality.

Diameter: 11 cm
