First French edition of this work devoted to Japan at the beginning of the 20th century, translated from English by Lugné-Philipon and published in Paris in 1908 by Vuibert et Nony.

Clive Holland offers a travel narrative mixing personal observations, descriptions of landscapes, monuments, traditions, scenes of daily life, and impressions of the Japanese society of the time.

The work bears witness to the keen interest in Japan in Europe at the turn of the century. It constitutes today a fascinating document on the Western representation of the country, its architecture, its customs and its transformations in the Meiji era.

This copy is presented in an elegant blue cloth binding with corners, boards adorned with marbled paper, title and gold lines on the spine, and a gilded top edge. The gold-lettered note “École Villiers” appears on the first board, indicating likely an old institutional provenance.
