Vase - Crystal - Art Deco

Small cut crystal vase, approximately 20 cm high, whose compact silhouette and the richness of the geometric decoration testify to particularly meticulous cutting work. The overall design is decisively Art Deco, with an architectural construction and a spectacular use of the crystal’s thickness. Comparable vases, produced in Belgium and Bohemia between the two world wars, similarly combine geometric volumes, deep cuts, and refraction effects.

The body, slightly swollen at the upper part, rests on a thick circular base and tapers gradually toward the bottom. The belly is entirely animated by a network of deep cuts forming large points, diamonds, and radiating motifs, to which are added long vertical facets that emphasize the depth of the crystal. The central decor thus produces a succession of nested geometric shapes, particularly luminous when the vase is lit. The neck is one of the most remarkable elements of the piece: it is made up of several superimposed polygonal registers, alternating vertical facets, projecting bands, and octagonal sections, up to a broad cut-corner opening. The thick, perfectly transparent base completes this highly architectural construction.

The vase is in excellent structural condition. It shows no cracks, chips, or apparent restoration, and the edges of the cuts remain sharp. However, a small horizontal scratch is noted inside the neck. A slight internal corrosion of the glass is also visible inside the vase, locally giving it a blue-tinged or slightly opalescent appearance depending on the light incidence. This alteration remains internal and does not affect the piece’s structural integrity in any way.

Through its design and decorative vocabulary, this vase belongs to the great tradition of geometric crystal cutting developed during the Art Deco period. Val Saint Lambert, Moser, and several Bohemian manufactories of the era all show a marked interest in architectural volumes, deep cuts, and light effects obtained directly from the mass of crystal. Examples of Val Saint Lambert around 20 cm and Moser vases from the 1930s display comparable formal explorations. In the absence of a signature or visible mark, it seems preferable to keep an open attribution rather than link the vase to a specific manufacturer.
