AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

MAGNIFICENT UNIQUE COMBINATION

A very beautiful ticket from the Olympic Games in 1900 in France, Paris. Includes holder and postcard. In an episode of Pawn Stars, a single ticket was sold for 120 dollars (photo 5). A wonderful collector's item.

The Olympic Games were held in 1900 in France, Paris, during the World’s Fair. This lot also includes an original fine postcard from this Olympic year 1900 with the Eiffel Tower and some buildings of the World’s Fair along the Seine River. A nicely styled, old postcard PARIS enhances the entire presentation.

All together an extremely rare combination.

The linkage to the World’s Fair was actually a financial necessity for the Games. Pierre de Coubertin had originally counted on subsidies from the French government and the financial world, but both institutions did not come up with the necessary money. Therefore, for De Coubertin there was nothing else to do but to link the Olympic Games to the organization of the World’s Fair that year.

The organization of the Games was therefore in the hands of the organizing committee of the World’s Fair. That committee, however, had little regard for the sport events, which therefore had to be carried out in very poor accommodations. There was no Olympic stadium built, and eventually many Parisian sports clubs took on the organization of the various events. For example, the athletics competitions were conducted on the grass tracks of the Racing Club de France and the relay events on a meadow.
