Description from the seller
The Death of Cleopatra, (specified masterpiece by the artist on the back)
Max-Daniel Mixed media on canvas 120 × 60 cm - Original unique work – 2026
This work was born from a constant dialogue between artificial intelligence, digital creation, and ancient traditional oil painting techniques.
The initial image is never considered an end in itself, but as a material to work with. The composition was developed in several successive steps: iconographic research, image creation, format extension, reconstruction of the upper part, assembling the different sequences, harmonizing the whole, printing on canvas and then direct intervention with oil painting.
The column of smoke rising toward the palace opening was entirely made by hand, with titanium white and Flemish medium. This intervention is not a mere decorative addition: it extends the movement of the composition, introduces real material, and marks the painter’s physical presence within the work.
Since 1989, Max-Daniel has been exploring the possibilities offered by the hybridization of traditional techniques and computer technologies. Long before the rise of AI tools, this research already dealt with the relationships between digital creation, painting, photography, printing, and manual intervention. Artificial intelligence today constitutes an additional step in this reflection carried out for more than thirty-five years.
The subject fully embraces its imaginary character. This Cleopatra belongs less to history than to the collective memory of the great academic paintings of the 19th century and Hollywood peplums. The work asserts this dramatic dimension, where references cross freely to build a deliberately fantasized vision.
The singularity of this realization does not lie in the technique used. What makes the work is the path of thought that builds it. Each step calls the next; every decision transforms the whole; every intervention dialogues with the previous ones until the final balance.
A work is not defined by the tools that produced it, but by the occurrences of thought that progressively built it.
It is in this succession of choices, corrections, relapses, assemblies and manual interventions that its authenticity rests. In contrast to a mass-produced image, this painting is the result of a long creative process, where artificial intelligence becomes a partner among others in service of an artistic vision.
This work is part of the emergence of a resolutely postmodern painting, where the boundaries between disciplines fade in favor of an open, free and experimental practice. It bears witness to the birth of a new plastic language, intended for collectors and art lovers curious about the novel forms painting can take today.
