The seascape shows a sailing vessel with several figures on moving water. The brown hull and light sails are located to the right of center. Along the horizon smaller sailing craft are depicted. On the right in the foreground drifts a reddish-brown object with a loop-shaped upper part. The green water has white crests; the gray-blue sky transitions near the left horizon into pink and orange tones. The monogram is applied in red at the lower right.

Technique and material analysis

The oil painting is executed on a wooden panel with beveled edges on the back. In the sky, predominantly horizontal brushstrokes are recognizable. The waves are built up from curved strokes and short, light accents. Fine lines articulate masts and rigging; the figures are indicated with a few compact color touches.

Composition and formal analysis

The low horizon leaves a large part of the picture plane for the sky. The main vessel forms an asymmetric focal point to the right of center. Slanted masts, curved sail contours and wave crests interrupt the horizontal order. The smaller ships on the horizon enhance the sense of depth. The light sails contrast with the dark hull and the gray sky, while the warm horizon zone faces the green water.

Stylistic and art-historical context

The recognizable depiction of vessels, rigging and surf aligns with Realism. The low viewpoint, the expansive sky and the emphasis on navigation and water movement place the work within the maritime painting tradition of the nineteenth century. The designation Dutch School remains a general attribution.
