W.D. & H.O. Wills & Turf Cigarettes – Vintage British Football Cards – 1930s–1940s Collection
Description
Interesting collection of original vintage British football cigarette cards, mainly dating from the 1930s and 1940s, an important period in the history of British football and cigarette-card collecting.
The lot includes cards issued by W.D. & H.O. Wills (Wills’s Cigarettes) and Turf Cigarettes, featuring footballers from many historic British clubs.
Teams represented include Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Sunderland, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City, Huddersfield Town, Rangers, and others.
The collection includes several well-known footballers of the period, alongside many other players who competed in British football during the pre-war and post-war eras.
The W.D. & H.O. Wills cards belong to the famous tradition of cigarette cards distributed with tobacco products and collected in dedicated albums.
The Turf Cigarettes football cards are particularly interesting because they were originally printed as part of the cigarette-pack packaging and were intended to be hand-cut by collectors, which explains the characteristic edges and variations found on surviving examples.
The cards are now approximately 80–90 years old and are offered in varied original vintage condition. Age-related wear, creases, marks, edge wear and other signs of handling or storage may be present.
No restoration has been carried out.
