Carreras “Turf” Cigarettes – 50 Sports Series – Vintage British Sports Cards – Football, Cricket, Boxing & Motorsport – 1949
An interesting collection of original Carreras “Turf” Cigarettes – 50 Sports Series cards, issued in Britain in 1949.
This fascinating post-war series consists of 50 different sporting personalities and covers a wide variety of British sports, making it considerably more diverse than a standard football-only cigarette card set.
The cards offered in this lot feature personalities from football, cricket, boxing, motorcycle racing/speedway and other sports.
Among the athletes visible in the collection are:
Alan Watkins, Len Hutton, Billy Thompson, Bill Edrich, Trevor Ford, Stan Pearson, Johnny Carey, Len Shackleton, Stanley Matthews, Albert Stubbins, Frank Swift, Douglas Wright, Ronnie Rooke, J. Harvey, Alec Bedser, Malcolm Craven, Bill Kitchen, Les Anning and others.
One particularly attractive example is Alan Watkins – No. 42, featuring the distinctive caricature-style artwork used for some cards in the series.
An unusual method of production
One of the most interesting characteristics of these Turf cards is their origin.
Unlike conventional cigarette cards that were simply inserted loose inside a packet, examples from this period were printed as part of the cardboard slides used in Turf cigarette packaging and subsequently cut out by collectors.
For this reason, surviving examples can show differences in their borders and cutting. These characteristics are part of the original way in which the cards were collected and should not necessarily be considered modern alterations.
The collection is now approximately 77 years old.
The cards remain in original vintage condition, with varying degrees of age-related wear. Some examples show creases, surface wear, marks, discolouration, edge wear and irregularities consistent with their age and original method of production.
No restoration has been carried out.
