A Chinese lacquered work box fully equipped for export with gold decoration depicting scenes of Chinese life, circa 1810 Description: A very fine export Chinese sewing box of complex octagonal curved form, with fine decoration of oriental scenes framed within pedestals on golden bat feet. Made of black lacquered wood with hand-painted gold décor depicting scenes of court life in lobed medallions. Rare elongated octagonal form compressed, with 4 gilded claw/bat feet carved and gilded, gilded side handles and original hinges. Background full of stylized floral diaper design. Top with main scene of mandarins in a pavilion with a garden. Sides with figures of a couple offering. INTERIOR: Removable tray with additional lids and front drawer. Fully equipped with original ivory sewing tools turned and carved: C-screw sewing clamp, fish-shaped needle case, shuttle, thimble, spools, awl, and pin cushion in almond-shaped dragon-carved ivory. Circa 1810. Origin Canton. Good condition for age, with wear and craquelure typical of 200-year-old lacquer, minor losses at corners and base (see photos). Interior with complete tools, ivory with natural yellow patina. Original key with rope-type bow. Museum piece.
