Rare Antique Sestant H. Hughes & Son London (1903-1939) - Original Box and Certificate, Serial No. 7567
Fascinating antique nautical sextant from the illustrious British manufacturer H. Hughes & Son Ltd, London, inscribed directly on the main arc (graduated arc).
A piece of high historical and collecting interest: the instrument is supplied complete with its original solid wood case, inside which the original Certificate of Examination and Testing dated 1939 is perfectly preserved (issued in Copenhagen shortly before the outbreak of World War II). The serial number impressed on the metal of the sextant (7567) matches 100% with the one reported on the paper certificate, ensuring absolute coevality and authenticity of the set.
Condition and details:
Mechanical body: Excellent and sturdy, brass patina with the splendid aged appearance from sea use.
Optics and mirrors: The index mirror, the fixed horizon mirror and the magnifying lens mounted on the movable arm for reading the scale are intact and in perfect order. All fan solar filters (both front round and rear square) are present and functioning.
Accessories: Includes the original wooden box with green cloth and an original sun cap in brass that remains. The tubes for interchangeable telescopes are missing.
The Case: The central inset lock was removed at some point (probably due to key loss or mechanism blockage during wartime use). The box closes securely with the two original side lever latches that fit onto their respective pins. The external brass handle on top is original, solid, and fully functional.
