Description from the seller

Giulio Fornoni (1866-1922) – View of Venice with canal and bridge – Oil on panel

Description

Fascinating oil on panel by Giulio Fornoni (Venice, 1866-1922), signed “G. Fornoni” in the bottom left.

The work depicts a suggestive Venetian view, with a canal crossing the composition, a small bridge and the characteristic architectures of the lagoon city. Particularly successful is the play of reflections on the water, rendered through green, ochre and brown tones, while the light illuminates the façades of the buildings, creating a warm Venetian atmosphere.

The subject is closely linked to the output of Giulio Fornoni, a Venetian painter active from the late 19th century to the early decades of the 20th century and particularly appreciated for his landscapes and views of his hometown.

Fornoni was born in Venice in 1866 and trained within the Venetian painting milieu, becoming a pupil of Guglielmo Ciardi, one of the leading figures of Venice’s 19th-century landscape painting. Contemporary sources recall his preference for representing Venice’s canals, subjects he interpreted under different atmospheric and lighting conditions.

His exhibition activity led him to participate in important Italian and international artistic events, including the Venice International Art Exhibitions, as well as exhibitions in Florence, Turin and abroad. Historical documentation of the Biennale explicitly notes his interest in the city’s canals.

The painting presented here thus constitutes a particularly representative subject of the artist’s production: the water, the ancient architecture, the bridge and the intimate dimension of the canal convey the image of a Venice distant from monumental views and more closely tied to the city’s daily life.

The work is enriched by a substantial antique carved wooden frame, characterized by a rich continuous relief decoration and a darkened and gilded finish, which gives the painting notable decorative presence.

The signature “G. Fornoni” is present and clearly legible in the bottom left, as documented in the photographs.
