​The present work, a mixed technique of oil and wax colors, shows an intensive depiction of a young man in a seaman’s uniform, stationed before a Mediterranean harbor town. The work bears clear stylistic references to the oeuvre of the prominent Greek painter Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989), particularly in the choice of subject and the specific iconography.
​Tsarouchis, known for his engagement with Greek identity and masculinity, devoted a large part of his work to portraying sailors and craftsmen. In this sense, the present work is to be interpreted as well. The seaman, with his open shirt and melancholic gaze, stands symbolically for a modern form of Greek hero worship that Tsarouchis cultivated.
​The composition is marked by a certain naïveté and immediacy. The background, a simplified view of a Greek island harbor with whitewashed houses and bright blue water, recalls the landscapes that Tsarouchis often used as a foil for his figures in his works. The use of wax colors gives the surface a special texture and color depth, reminiscent of Byzantine icon painting—a technique that Tsarouchis also studied and integrated into his work.
