Lawson – Seascape with sailing ships and a rocky coast – Oil on prepared cardboard Winsor & Newton – 1911

Fascinating oil on prepared cardboard, signed “Lawson” and dated 1911 in the bottom left, depicting a suggestive seascape with sailing ships navigating along a rocky coast.

The composition is dominated by the rough sea, rendered with rich, tactile paint and with numerous touches of colour that effectively convey the movement of the waves and the reflections of light on the water.

At the center of the scene several vessels sail, among which stands out a craft with distinctive red sails, accompanied by large square-rigged ships. On the right rises an imposing rocky coast, animated by small figures and seagulls, while in the distance a tower or coastal lighthouse is visible.

Particularly evocative is the sky, occupied by large masses of clouds and by luminous gaps in shades of blue, pink and yellow, which give depth and atmosphere to the entire composition.

The work is signed “Lawson” and dated 1911 in the bottom left. Since documentation sufficient to conclusively connect the signature to a specific artist with the same name has not been found, the painting is prudently presented with the signature as reported on the work.

Of particular interest is the original stamp on the back of the support, attributable to the famous English manufacturer of art materials Winsor & Newton Limited, with the address 38 Rathbone Place, London W. The presence of this mark is consistent with dating the work to the early years of the 20th century.
