Universal geographical dictionary, containing an exact description of the States, Kingdoms, Towns, Fortresses, Mountains, Capes, Islands, Peninsulas, Lakes, Seas, Gulfs, Straits, &c. of the Universe. All drawn from Baudrand’s Latin Geographical Dictionary, from the best Accounts, the most famous Voyages, and the most faithful Maps. A work pushed further than any that has appeared hitherto in French. An ample Latin catalog of the ancient and modern names of places, translated into French, has been added.

French edition of the famous geographical dictionary by Michel-Antoine Baudrand, arranged and augmented by Charles Maty, whose dedication is signed C. Maty.

Volume in-4° (16.5 × 22.8 cm), bound in full brown calf of the period. Spine with five raised bands, richly decorated with florets and gilt compartments, with a title piece. Edges ornamented with a gold decorative pattern. Guards of dominoté paper with polychrome decoration. Title printed in red and black with engraved vignette. Text in two columns. Bookmarks preserved.

Collation: [10] ff., 1040 pp., [144] pp. of index.

Condition: binding showing general wear: leather rubbed, corners and edges worn; upper cap very rubbed with leather loss, as well as loss at the first panel. Gold decoration nevertheless well preserved overall. Interior complete, with yellowed paper, foxing and scattered stains, some marginal tears and signs of use, more evident on the first and last leaves. No apparent loss of text.

An interesting copy of this important geographical compilation from the early eighteenth century, in its period binding and with its dominoté guards.
