- Artistic description:
Singular figurative composition entitled “Sacrifice,” attributed to Alexander Gazhur. The scene presents two enigmatic figures clad in long green garments. Between them sits a white dove atop a central structure, becoming the main visual and symbolic focal point of the piece.
The figure on the left holds a container, while the figure on the right extends a hand toward the bird and carries over the shoulder a tool resembling a mattock. These elements, together with the title of the work, suggest a ritual or allegorical scene around sacrifice, death, purity, and the fragility of life.
The work stands out especially for its unsettling atmosphere. The palette is dominated by dark greens, ochres, and muted yellows, over a background with a gradual transition that creates a sense of undefined, almost dreamlike space. The intense white of the dove deliberately breaks the chromatic uniformity and concentrates attention in the center of the scene.
The figures have a marked verticality and a deliberately dehumanized appearance, while the absence of precise spatial references reinforces the symbolic and surreal character of the painting. The simple treatment of volumes and the elongated shapes lend the composition a language close to expressionism and certain mid-20th-century European figurative currents.
A work of strong visual personality, rich in symbolism and with an iconography that is uncommon, especially attractive to collectors of 20th-century figurative, surreal, and symbolic painting.
