Magnificent devotional painting from the late 17th century representing The Transit of Saint Joseph, one of the most significant religious iconographies of Catholic Baroque art.

The scene shows Saint Joseph on his deathbed, accompanied by Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, forming an image of deep spiritual intimacy. Christ appears beside the saint in a gesture of blessing in his final moments, while the Virgin Mary adopts a posture of contemplation and prayer.

In the upper plane of the composition, angels and cherubs guard the scene and reinforce its celestial dimension. Among these elements, the presence of a lit candle stands out, a traditional symbol of the light of faith, Christian hope, and the soul’s guidance toward eternity.

The work presents a composition typically Baroque, characterized by a strong emotional component, contained theatricality, and expressive use of lighting. The contrast between shadowed areas and illuminated figures directs the gaze to the protagonists and intensifies the supernatural character of the episode.

Special relevance lies in the choice of copper as the pictorial support. During the 16th and 17th centuries, this material was especially valued for small and medium formats due to its smooth, non-porous surface, which allowed painting to be applied with extraordinary precision.
