Tile - Landscape scenes - Limoges - 1940-1950 - Wintry Waldland Sheep

Historically significant and unique porcelain test plaque (plaque d'essai) from Limoges, France, dated 1940 and 1942.

The front depicts a finely detailed grisaille underglaze painting showing a stag and hind in a snowy winter landscape, designed to showcase the tonal range and stability of black underglaze pigments under high-fire kiln conditions.

Fully documented on the reverse:
- Original French factory inscription: "Essai du colorant noir sous glaçure N° 2 du 12 Janvier 1940"
- Impressed stamp: "FRANCE" with mold number
- WWII-era German annotation/inspection record: "Versuch schwarze Farbe unter-glasur No 2 von 12 Januar 1940 – Limoges, 16. September 1942 – Direktor, Porzellanfabrik"

Dimensions: approx. 20.5 × 24 cm (including frame).
Very good condition, porcelain is undamaged. Original wooden frame with metal corner braces shows authentic age-related patina.
