Japanese Sword Tsuba – Edo Period Iron Sukashi, Shoami School, Eggplant Motif – NBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho Certified
Description
This is an exceptional Japanese sword tsuba from the Edo period, finely crafted in iron and attributed to the renowned Shoami school.
The tsuba features an elegant openwork (sukashi) design depicting eggplants (nasubi), an auspicious motif in Japanese tradition traditionally associated with good fortune, fulfillment, and prosperity.
The iron surface has developed a rich, deep patina characteristic of fine antique Japanese sword fittings. Original copper plugs (sekigane) are fitted around the nakago-ana, reflecting historical adjustment and careful preservation of the fitting.
With a diameter of approximately 8.0 cm and a weight of 135 g, the tsuba has a substantial yet refined presence, making it an impressive example of Edo-period iron sukashi work.
The piece is accompanied by an official NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai) Tokubetsu Kicho certification paper issued in Showa 47 (1972). The certificate attributes the work to the Shoami school.
The tsuba also comes with a custom-made paulownia wood box (kiri bako), including a fitted cushion, as well as the original NBTHK paper sleeve.
