Origin: India; original wooden relief depicting a Hindu deity with four arms, likely Krishna or Vishnu, in high relief with an architectural arch and decorative motifs, 30 cm high by 17 cm wide, provenance private collection.
Description from the seller
Relief from ancient India in carved wood depicting a four-armed Hindu deity – 30 cm
Description:
Ancient Indian wood-carved relief depicting a four-armed Hindu deity, richly adorned and wearing a tall crown.
The deity is presented in an architectural composition in the shape of an arch, densely decorated with vegetal and ornamental motifs. A protective face is carved at the top of the arch, while several animals appear in the lower part of the composition.
The sculpture features highly detailed high-relief work, with many elements carved separately and pierced. The brown patina and signs of wear are visible across the piece.
The back is also carved and hollowed, with marks corresponding to the age and the artisanal fabrication of the piece.
* Probable origin: India
* Material: wood
* Technique: deeply relief-carved and pierced wood
* Height: 30 cm
* Width: 17 cm
The object is a wood-carved bas-relief of Indian origin that plausibly represents a Hindu deity, such as Krishna or Vishnu, alongside a cow or calf.
Main characteristics
Material: Brown wood worked in deep relief, characteristic of traditional Indian craftsmanship from the south.
Top details: The arch surrounding the figure is topped with a Kirtimukha mask (the “face of glory”), a protective motif commonly found in temple architecture.
Provenance type: This kind of ancient piece often comes from architectural elements or sacred procession chariot fragments (ratha).
Condition: ancient state with patina, signs of time. See the photographs carefully.
