The face rises from black like something the sea has finally given back. A fisherman, old beyond counting, his brow ridged in furrows that no longer read as wrinkles but as tide lines, the record of decades spent reading weather in water. The beard falls in the same restless curls as a breaking wave, and the mouth, worn and gapped, holds the particular silence of a man who has said his last word to the horizon.

Nothing here was painted, printed or inked onto the surface. The likeness is cut from depth alone, a controlled absence beneath the surface that lets light do the work a brush never could. Move past it and the face dissolves into shadow, return and it gathers itself again, always a little different from how you left it.

From across the room it is monumental and still, a marble presence that could have stood in a coastal shrine for a thousand years. Close in, that stillness breaks apart into a field of depth, ridge after ridge catching and releasing the light exactly as sun catches and releases the surface of open water.

Beneath the portrait sits a quieter subject: what the sea leaves on a man who gives it his whole working life. The sunken cheeks and the heavy, weathered lids speak less of age than of exposure, of a body shaped by something larger and older than itself, the way a shoreline is shaped by tide rather than by any single wave.

About the Artist

My name is Tijs Dragtsma, founder of TD Fine Art Studio.

As an artist, I am driven by a constant desire to explore new visual languages. I do not see art as a fixed style, but as an evolving field of discovery where material, structure, light and emotion come together.

My work often begins with a simple question. How can a material speak in a new way. How can hardness become intimacy. How can precision create emotion. That search lies at the heart of everything I create.

Within TD Fine Art Studio, each body of work is approached as its own world, with its own logic, atmosphere and visual identity. Some works are built through rhythm, repetition and structure. Others emerge through absence, shadow, reflection or tension. What connects them is a shared commitment to originality, clarity and emotional presence.

I am fascinated by contrast. Between strength and fragility. Between control and feeling. Between what is visible and what is left open to interpretation. My goal is not simply to make an image, but to create a work that holds attention, invites reflection and continues to reveal itself over time.
