It begins with a shape that everyone already knows, the rounded body, the raised lid, the arc of a handle reaching back toward a spout. But nothing here is remembered from a kitchen shelf. Set against total darkness, the kettle becomes something closer to a monument, frontal, still, filling the square as if it had always belonged at this scale.

From across the room it reads as pure white silence, a single pale mass suspended in black. Step closer and the surface opens into something else, a shifting field of depth where light gathers and slides, where the curve of the spout and the loop of the handle emerge only because contrast and perspective allow them to.

There is no paint here, no print, no ink. The image is built entirely from depth and a controlled absence, and it exists only in the conversation between the surface and the light that falls across it. Move, and the kettle tilts between presence and disappearance. Stand still, and it holds you in that same stillness.

A kettle is an object of waiting, of warmth held in reserve, of a small daily ceremony repeated without thought. Rendered this way, stripped of color and context, it becomes something closer to a vessel for quiet itself, monumental precisely because it asks for nothing.

About the Artist

My name is Tijs Dragtsma, founder of TD Fine Art Studio.

As an artist, I am driven by a constant desire to explore new visual languages. I do not see art as a fixed style, but as an evolving field of discovery where material, structure, light and emotion come together.

My work often begins with a simple question. How can a material speak in a new way. How can hardness become intimacy. How can precision create emotion. That search lies at the heart of everything I create.

Within TD Fine Art Studio, each body of work is approached as its own world, with its own logic, atmosphere and visual identity. Some works are built through rhythm, repetition and structure. Others emerge through absence, shadow, reflection or tension. What connects them is a shared commitment to originality, clarity and emotional presence.

I am fascinated by contrast. Between strength and fragility. Between control and feeling. Between what is visible and what is left open to interpretation. My goal is not simply to make an image, but to create a work that holds attention, invites reflection and continues to reveal itself over time.
