Order Spiraling Into Dark begins with a familiar pattern, the even rhythm of a checkerboard, and follows it as it loses its footing. The grid does not break so much as it surrenders, curling inward until its own logic becomes a whirlpool with no bottom in sight.

Nothing here was painted, printed, or inked onto the surface. The image is built from depth and absence, a field of individual marks catching the light along the curve of the fall, while the very center of the spiral is left entirely dark. That darkness is not a gap in the composition. It is the destination the whole pattern has been moving toward.

Seen from across a room, the work reads as a single gesture, a coil pulling everything toward its own vanishing point. Move closer and the coil resolves into countless small distinctions, each one holding its place in the turn before the pattern loosens, scatters, and lets go along the lower edge, as though order itself were spilling into something looser and more uncertain.

There is a quiet unease in watching a rigid structure choose its own dissolution, and a quiet relief in it too. The checkerboard, that oldest sign of measured order, gives way to a shape with no fixed edge and no center it will hold onto. What remains is a kind of falling that never quite lands, held in suspension by light rather than by paint or by print.

The image appears and recedes as the light shifts and as the viewer moves, never settling into one fixed reading. Some hours it looks like a pattern still governing itself. Others it looks like the moment just after control was lost.

About the Artist

My name is Tijs Dragtsma, founder of TD Fine Art Studio.

As an artist, I am driven by a constant desire to explore new visual languages. I do not see art as a fixed style, but as an evolving field of discovery where material, structure, light and emotion come together.

My work often begins with a simple question. How can a material speak in a new way. How can hardness become intimacy. How can precision create emotion. That search lies at the heart of everything I create.
