Description from the seller
An attractive oil on canvas by the Alicante-born painter Antonio Martínez Llobregad (1900-1976), depicting an elegant bouquet of roses arranged in a ceramic vase. The work is fully embedded in the Spanish floral still life tradition, interpreted through a delicate, luminous painting with careful construction.
The composition centers on the vase, placed in the middle and resting on a blue cloth with broad folds. From this container unfolds a abundant cluster of roses at various stages of opening, forming an ascending and balanced structure. The irregular distribution of the flowers avoids rigidity and adds naturalness, rhythm and movement to the whole.
The artist gives special prominence to the roses, resolved through a rich range of pinks, corals, salmon tones and reddish hues. The brushstrokes, visible and modulated, describe the petals with ease, alternating zones of greater definition with others more synthetical. This procedure provides volume and freshness to the flowers without succumbing to overly meticulous description.
The work presents an essentially realistic language, enriched by a free brushwork and a sensibility close to decorative post-impressionism. Color and painting matter play a fundamental role, especially in the corollas, where overlapping strokes generate a vibrant and luminous surface.
The vase is treated with special attention to its material qualities. Its surface combines reddish, gray, brown tones and light reflections that suggest a sober glazed ceramic. Front lighting creates a focal point on the vessel and reinforces its volume, while the shadow projected on the cloth helps anchor it within the space.
The blue cloth introduces an intense chromatic contrast with the warm tones of the flowers and the vase. Its folds, resolved through graduations of blue, gray and turquoise, add depth to the foreground and visually frame the composition. The light, neutral background, for its part, allows the bouquet to stand out more clearly.
The painting bears the signature “A. Martínez Llobregad” in the lower left margin. For its chromatic harmony, its careful execution and the timeless appeal of its subject, it constitutes a representative work of Spanish 20th-century floral painting, of notable artistic and decorative interest.
The work is framed. The frame will be shipped free of charge as a courtesy, with no commercial value declared, and its condition will not be grounds for complaint.
Prospective buyers are advised to carefully review all photographs before bidding, as they are an essential part of the description and faithfully show the state of conservation of the work and the frame.
