Giuliano Ottaviani was born in Foligno (Perugia). Even at a young age, his predisposition for the applied arts with riotous creativity and notable technical virtuosity was evident; for this reason he attended the School of Art in Perugia and, under the critical eye of M° Domenico Purificato, earned the diploma at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan.

After debuting with a first solo show in Milan, at only 17 he moved his attention to Switzerland and, in Zurich, the great gallerist Her Bolag wanted to buy some of his works for his private collection. Until 1976 Ottaviani divided his time between Italy and Switzerland, nations that saw his desire to realize himself fully in the artistic field grow, and more solo shows followed; requests to continue teaching painting and sculpture, which he practiced briefly, were of little use, dedicating his life to constant and total commitment to the search for new ideas and forms.

Many satisfactions marked the path of Giuliano Ottaviani, a journey rich in success: in Paris, after being awarded the Gold Medal of the Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters, 1st prize, the only Italian, he was the author of several frescoes in a well-known fashionable venue; the galleries of the French capital contended to exhibit his works in solo shows: Gallerie du Pack Royal, Gallerie Robin.
In Italy he is assiduous in exhibiting his works along the Amalfi Coast: from Positano to Ravello, Amalfi hosts him in the Republic’s Arsenals, and on that occasion he undertook the illustration of the book ‘Masamoeòòp do Amalfi’ at the request of the same Municipality. He will be present for as many as 8 years with solo shows.

In 1988 the city of Nantes requests his presence on the occasion of the bicentennial of the French Revolution and a large exhibition is set up in memory of the event, and the works of the ‘Masaniello of Amalfi’ are exhibited on that occasion as a testimony to the Neapolitan revolt. His art thus leads him to become a European citizen, exhibiting in Germany in Cologne, Nuremberg and other German cities; annually 6-8 solo shows alternated and, more than in private galleries, his works were exhibited in centers made available by various Municipalities and Provinces that were honored to host the artist by offering the public his vast creativity.

Ottaviani’s work goes beyond painting and sculpture, extending to jewelry and interior design, to urban furnishings with the realization of monumental sculptures from 2 to 6 meters high which, externally of high artistic craftsmanship and internally of great social use. Moreover, underground parking for vehicles and multi-storey exhibition stands for presenting a wide variety of items: art, fashion and folk specialty from every region. In the 1980s Master Ottaviani founded a European group which many artists of various nationalities joined, and organized high-level international exhibitions. In France, the artist exhibited at various times in several cities: Lyon hosted him in the municipal halls, Beaulieu sur Mer invited him to the Monumental Sculpture show in several editions, and in Charlieu Master Ottaviani created, in the civic museum, a mural of 10 x 20 meters and held a summer sculpture course invited by the European university. The Côte d’Azur also benefited from his work: Cannes, Antibes, Valauris, Biot, Le Luc, Saint-Jeannet, Cap d’Ail saw a succession of solo shows and the prestigious gallery in Nice ‘Quadrige’ permanently displays his works. The artist’s works have been seen in almost all Italian cities: from the prestigious Rendano Theatre in Cosenza, to the Taormina exhibition hall, from Palazzo Barberini in Rome, to the La Loggia Gallery in Udine, from the Percorsi d’arte Gallery in Venice to the Le Muse Gallery in Bari, and many others of notable importance such as the Sanremo casino and for 8 more years in many towns along the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. Europe has now become a limited field for M° Ottaviani’s prospects and his activity reaches America. He is officially invited by New York University and hosted there with a large solo show. Followed by Los Angeles, Laguna Beach and many more. The largest and most prestigious nuclear center in the world, Fermilab in Chicago, invites him to publicly perform a grand curtain of 2 meters x 20 in a performance titled ‘Symbiosis in Concert’, his new idea: to combine music with painting. Two capable artists, a pianist and a violinist accompany Master Ottaviani performing a classical music concert.

The Principality of Monaco hosts him repeatedly to perform his performances in Monte Carlo and the tour continues also in Italy. Liguria is the Italian region that invites Giuliano Ottaviani most often to its smiling towns of Spotorno, Savona, Celle Ligure, Loano, Varazze and others. For his valid contribution to the artistic field in 1991 the President of the Republic Francesco Cossiga awarded him the Insignia of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. His vast work also extends into numismatics and philately: he creates medals on commission for Banks and Religious Institutions, and for the Centenary of the birth of the poet Eugenio Montale he designed the postal cancellation for the Italian State Mint. Since 1997 Master Ottaviani has dedicated his time and notable creativity to the social field: in Brazil, in São Paulo, he was offered the opportunity to teach sculpture to street kids, called pichadores, youths who, merely by being born poor, become social misfits and commit crimes punishable by local law. The rehabilitation of these kids has led various municipal administrations to value Ottaviani’s work by offering the opportunity to found the 1st Ottaviani Academy in Brazil. The same operation will be followed in the near future in other Brazilian cities and probably also in Italy.

1998 marked a very important turning point for Giuliano Ottaviani’s activity: winner of an international sculptors’ competition, he had the opportunity to create a marble sculpture 5 meters tall in China, precisely in Changchun, and he became the first Italian to have a sculpture permanently exhibited in a Chinese square. He later exhibited at the World Art Museum China Millennium Monument on the occasion of Italy in China Year 2006, where 13 large monumental works remained in the museum’s collection. The Chinese tour continued to Shanghai, where the city acquired numerous works for the public collection. After Shanghai he moved again to Brazil for the Salvador city museum exhibition.

His curriculum vitae is deposited in archives at: Florence, Kunsthochs Institut in Florence, Paris, Beaubourg, Centre Pompidou.
He is registered with the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art – Rome.
