Bowl - Porcelain - Song Dynasty Bowl

An interesting and attractive antique Chinese beige-glazed carved bowl, attributed to the Song Dynasty (960–1279), displaying a beautiful combination of carved decoration, warm monochrome glaze and extensive fine crackling.

The bowl is well potted with a rounded body, gently flared rim and raised circular foot. The exterior is decorated with freely carved and incised floral and petal-like motifs beneath the glaze. The carved decoration remains clearly visible through the glaze, creating an attractive sense of depth and texture.

The entire vessel is covered in a distinctive warm creamy-beige glaze, displaying a particularly beautiful and extensive network of fine crackle lines across both the interior and exterior. The aged crackle pattern gives the surface considerable character and complements the restrained carved decoration beautifully.

The underside has an unglazed foot revealing the buff-coloured ceramic body. Of particular interest, the recessed base bears a three-character inscription written in dark ink. Ink inscriptions and identifying marks are known on early Chinese ceramics and may relate to ownership, workshop, inventory or other historical usage. The precise reading and significance of this particular three-character inscription have not been established.

The understated form, monochrome glaze, carved decoration and beautifully aged crackled surface give the bowl a strong early Chinese ceramic character.

Condition

The bowl has been previously broken and restored, and the repaired fracture lines remain visible across both the interior and exterior.

These restored structural fracture lines should be distinguished from the bowl’s extensive fine crackle pattern in the glaze, which is an attractive characteristic of the glazed surface and gives the piece its distinctive aged appearance.

There is also general surface wear, staining and patination consistent with considerable age. Please study all photographs carefully, as the restoration and overall condition are clearly shown and the photographs form an essential part of the description.
