My work unfolds on a variety of supports. Canvas, paper, wood, Corian, as my wishes guide me...
Playing with density, materials, transparencies, sculpting groups and giving shape to a crowd that is always different.
My characters must be sufficiently identical to form a human type that I hope is generous but sufficiently different to represent what is most precious in art as in human society: alterity.
A painting of the plural singular...
"Gaëtan de Séguin paints crowds. His crowds are made up of a multitude of silhouettes, almost identical yet all singular. Beings who, by the action of painting itself, become motifs. Recurrent, haunting, swarming, reconstructing a new life, a new being.
Strange and non-communicative, this silhouette sometimes escapes the crowd but without finding its salvation. Alone, crossing paths with its look-alike without really understanding it...
When you know Gaëtan, this is astonishing, he who loves words and conversation so much. Could his painting be his negative double? The multitude and the unique, anonymity and the personal, silence and noise. There is all of that in Gaëtan de Séguin's painting, a painting of the plural singular."
My work is expressed on various supports.
Canvas, paper, wood, corian, according to my desires... Playing with density, materials, transparencies, sculpting groups and giving shape to a crowd that is always different.
My characters have a duty to be sufficiently identical to form a human genre that I hope is generous but sufficiently different to represent what is most precious in art as in human society: alterity.
A painting of the plural singular
"Gaëtan de Séguin paints crowds. His crowds are made up with a multitude of silhouettes, all of them almost identical but also singular. Beings who, by the action of the painting itself, become patterns. Recurrent, haunting, swarming, building a new life, a new being.
Sometimes the silhouette, peculiar and mute, escapes from the crowd but never finds its salvation. Alone, crossing paths with its peers without ever truly understanding them.
Multitude and unique, anonymity and privacy, silence and noise. There is all of this gathered into Gaëtan’s painting, a painting of the plural singular."
