Natalie Ulmann - "Bordeaux Dance"

“Bordeaux Dance” is an ongoing series of abstract paintings in which movement, gesture, and emotion meet in a pared-down yet powerful visual language. Each work is a standalone unique piece, connected through a shared visual vocabulary: fine Bordeaux-colored lines, droplets, and densifications on a smooth, sand-colored surface.

At the center is the expression of movement and presence. The Bordeaux color is drawn, curved, and dropped intuitively and immediately, as in a dance. The composition feels like the recording of a fleeting gesture, captured on canvas.

Particularly characteristic is the interplay of materials: the calm, finely sanded surface forms a bright, open space, while the Bordeaux color, with its high-gloss application, reflects light and makes the movement of the line visible. Fine splashes, droplets, and densifications are preserved intentionally, giving the work depth, tension, and a strong physical presence.

The works in the series are inspired by Action Painting, yet deliberately rely on reduction and openness. Generous free spaces allow the gestures to unfold and direct the gaze toward rhythm, balance, and the energy of the color application.

“Bordeaux Dance” invites open interpretation. The series develops from piece to piece and remains open to new movements, new gestures, and new readings — like a dance that constantly changes yet follows its own rhythm.

Natalie Ulmann (born 1980) is a freelance artist from Germany. She creates conceptual works as well as visual art in acrylic and mixed-media techniques. Especially fascinated by the harmony between tactile textures and colors, she passionately experiments with various materials to achieve striking effects and to lead the viewer into a deeper engagement with her works.
