Vintage rearing ceramic horse – powerful sculptural horse figure – Mid-Century

A particularly decorative rearing horse figure in glossy white ceramic, where power, movement and elegance come together beautifully. The horse stands high on its hind legs, with the forelegs free in the air, the neck boldly stretched, and the finely shaped mane flowing backward.

The piece has a strikingly dynamic composition. The muscular chest and hindquarter are smoothly modeled, while the mane, tail, and rocky base are rendered with stronger relief. The completely white high-gloss finish gives the sculpture an almost Blanc-de-Chine-like appearance.

Such rearing horses were especially popular subjects among European porcelain manufacturers in the mid-20th century. Among others, Rosenthal, Hutschenreuther, Goebel and CERO produced variants of the rearing horse. Thus, white Rosenthal horses from the mid-20th century are well known, while CERO in West Germany also produced such dynamic horse figures.

Monumental rearing horses are also known from Hutschenreuther, including designs by the renowned sculptor Paul Scheurich around 1950. This underscores how popular this powerful motif was within European ceramics of this period.

For this example, no factory mark or signature is visible in the shown photos. Therefore, it is intentionally not attributed to Rosenthal, Goebel, Hutschenreuther or any other manufacturer. The design and execution fit well within the tradition of European decorative ceramics from the mid to late 20th century.
