Description from the seller
Magnificent set of technical drawing instruments, marketed by the historic Librería Galán (Oviedo), dating from the late 19th century to the early decades of the 20th century.
An interesting and somewhat unusual antique case of drawing and drafting instruments, preserved in its original wooden box with interior lined in dark blue fabric.
The piece presents on the inside of the lid a perfectly visible golden inscription:
“LIBRERIA GALAN
OVIEDO”
This detail gives the set considerable historical and documentary interest, as it directly links it to one of Oviedo’s historic bookstores and stationers.
The case retains a set of metal instruments intended for technical drawing, delineation, architecture, engineering, geometry and precision work, including different drafting tools, compasses/dividers and drafting accessories. The instruments feature a combination of gold-colored brass and steel, with the natural patina inherent to several decades of use and preservation.
This mark adds historical interest and collectible value, turning the set into a singular piece within the realm of antique scientific instruments.
Librería Galán was one of the best-known bookstores and stationers in Oviedo during the late 19th century and much of the 20th.
Specializing in school materials, drawing instruments, technical books and supplies for engineering and architecture students.
It was common for these bookstores to commission cases from European manufacturers and customize them with their gold seal.
Its name on the interior of the case adds historical interest and collectible value.
