With this vertically formatted work, Medsan brings forth Articuno — フリーザー, the legendary ice bird from the first-generation Pokémon — above a mountain village buried under snow. The composition directly cites Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e printmaking, and in particular the Night Snow from the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, where travelers bent under their straw hats weather the storm. The red cartouche 雪の精, “the spirit of the snow,” grants the pocket monster the status of an ancestral yōkai.

The treatment adopts the woodblock printing grammar: soft black outlines, flat areas with no shading, bokashi gradients of the indigo sky, and above all the deep Prussian blue of the aizuri-e of the 19th century. The snow is not painted but reserved in the white of the paper, a printmaking technique that lends the snowflakes and the roofs their matte glow. The bird’s tail unfurls into undulating ribbons that become the storm itself, a direct echo of Hiroshige’s stylized rain lines. The grain of aged paper, the dark border, the calligraphic signature and the vermilion seal at the bottom right complete the illusion of an antique print.

The mashup says one simple and right thing: the modern legendary creature finds again the function of the traditional monster, to explain the climate, embody winter, frighten, and protect at the same time. The villagers do not look up, busy returning home before nightfall, and this detail anchors the legend in daily life rather than the spectacular. Two mythologies, one two centuries old and the other born in the 1990s, recognize themselves as one and the same way of naming what exceeds us.

A contemplative and graphic piece, ideal to add a touch of contemporary Japanese printmaking to the interior of a collector who is attached as much to pop culture as to the history of art.
